During the 5-year course of the Early Clinical Investigator Award, I have several goals for both my career development and research. My career development goals are centered around educational courses that will help me to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming an independent clinical investigator focusing on research involving cardiotoxicity of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). My career development educational objectives include obtaining a Master in Public Health (MPH), taking additional elective courses at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), and completing MD Anderson courses for principal investigators. The MPH program will consist of courses in clinical trial design and biostatistics that are essential for my career development and achieving a long-term goal of becoming an independent clinical investigator. The GSBS courses will focus on immunology which is directly related to my research interests in immunotherapy-related cardiotoxicity. The MD Anderson courses will go over regulatory issues pertinent to principal investigators that will also allow me to become a clinical researcher. My research objectives include evaluating whether surveillance with cardiac biomarkers is beneficial for predicting immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) myocarditis, developing a risk score to aid in predicting those who will develop ICI myocarditis, assessing the use of positron emission tomography in the diagnosis of ICI myocarditis, and testing the use of tocilizumab for treating ICI myocarditis. Completing these objectives will result in achieving both short-term and long-term research goals of performing a clinical trial, becoming an established clinical investigator with independent grant funding, and ultimately improving the clinical care of patients with ICI myocarditis through my research discoveries.
