The CPRIT training grant has served and will continue to attract additional talented trainees to Texas. These trainees complement the trainees in our existing federally supported training programs. This CPRIT training program is comprehensive in scope with the following types of trainees: 1) Summer students recruited from across the U.S. as part of BCM’s nationally recognized SMART program, 2) Graduate students recruited as part of a Cancer Track in our longstanding and highly competitive interdepartmental Integrative Molecular and Biomedical Sciences Program, 3) PhD graduate students participating in our unique Translational Biology and Molecular Medicine Program, that is designed to train PhDs to pursue research careers that bring about clinical translation of key scientific discoveries, 4) Medical students, including those in the Medical Student Research Track, MD/MS track as well as dual degree MD-PhD students in our Medical Scientist Training Program, 5) Postdoctoral fellows who will be recruited to the laboratories of the diverse training faculty, who have been organized into both basic and translational biology components as part of the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center and 6) Clinical Postdoctoral Trainees in Adult and Pediatric Medical Oncology, Cell and Gene Therapy and in Breast Cancer. These CPRIT trainees span the entire spectrum from college undergraduates to postgraduate PhD and MD trainees, and the cross-fertilization of trainees at different levels will enhance the training experience. In the past four years the trainees have included 80 summer students, 29 predoctoral students, 9 postdoctoral fellows and 8 clinical fellows. The 124 well-funded clinical and basic science faculty with a total grant support of $83.4 million of peer reviewed funding are all members of specific programmatic groups within the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center and members of training programs listed above.
