Lay Summary

Accurate margin assessment during cancer surgery is critical to fully removing tumors and reducing the risk of recurrence. The current standard—frozen section analysis—can take up to 30 minutes, requires a pathologist, prolongs surgery, and may damage tissue needed for further testing. NovaScan developed MarginScan, a compact, AI-enhanced device that uses bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) to rapidly detect cancer at the surgical margin—without freezing or destroying tissue. MarginScan delivers results in under 4 minutes and can be used directly in the operating room. The device’s lead indication is non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), with clinical studies showing 91% sensitivity and 96...
