Dr. Ivanov is a biochemist and structural biologist whose research interests lie in the areas of immunology and cancer. Dr. Ivanov carried out his undergraduate studies at the University of St. Petersburg in Russia and at Northeastern University in Boston, and he holds B.S. degrees in physics from both institutions.

He then moved to Harvard Medical School to pursue postdoctoral studies in structural biology under the guidance of another member of the National Academy, Dr. Gerhard Wagner. His work at Harvard Medical School was focused on molecular mechanisms of immunity and DNA repair and was recognized with a scholar award from the Harvard Center for AIDS Research and two individual R21 grants from the National Institutes of Health.

In February 2010, Dr. Ivanov was recruited as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry of UT Health San Antonio with the CPRIT First-Time Tenure-Track Recruitment Award. Dr. Ivanov’s laboratory seeks to understand how mechanisms of innate antiviral immunity contribute to HIV pathogenesis and cancer.

Another line of his research is focused on the development of DNA repair inhibitors as novel anti-cancer agents. Recent work from Dr. Ivanov’s laboratory has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cell Reports, Journal of Virology, Journal of Immunology, and other prestigious journals. His research is currently supported by an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health and a Young Investigator Award from the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Fund.
