We are delighted to nominate Dr. Carl Gay of the Department of Thoracic/Head & Neck Medical Oncology for the CPRIT Early Clinical Investigator Award. He has a longstanding commitment to translational and patient-focused research, including being twice awarded HHMI Fellowships during his undergraduate training at Johns Hopkins University and completing his M.D./Ph.D. at New York University School of Medicine where his thesis work on angiogenesis was published in Developmental Cell. Dr. Gay completed his medical oncology training via the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Pathway University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Gay was incredibly productive during this training, with a first author paper in Clinical Cancer Research, and key contributions to papers published in Cell, Cancer Discovery, and Cell Reports. He was also awarded a prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award. During his training, Dr. Gay established his current mentorship team of Drs. Lauren Byers and John Heymach, as well as key collaborators within other teams at MD Anderson, including within the Department of Pathology and Department of Computational Biology/Bioinformatics. He has emerged as an expert at integrating computational and pathologic data in small cell lung cancer. In the past 12-months alone, Dr. Gay has published first author (or co-first author) manuscripts in Cancer Cell and Nature Cancer that have redefined the molecular landscape of small cell lung cancer. He has already developed and activated investigator initiated trials based on his work, as well as serving in leadership positions on national studies building upon his contributions to small cell lung cancer biomarker development. An Early Clinical Investigator award would serve as a crucial boost to ensure the recent advances from Dr. Gay are expeditiously translated into clinical trials for small cell lung cancer patients that desperately need improved therapies.
