Lay Summary

Nutrients such as amino acids play key roles in regulating mammalian cell growth and proliferation. We have identified a conserved protein that inhibits cell growth when amino acids are insufficient. Interestingly, the gene encoding this protein is frequently absent in certain cancers, suggesting that its loss might promote the formation of tumors. We will determine how loss of this protein impacts cell growth and metabolism, as well as whether loss of this protein in adult mice might lead to cancer. These studies may in turn reveal strategies for combating tumors associated with loss of this protein.
