CPRIT Awards 35 New Grants, Surpasses the Halfway Point of its Authorized Funding

AUSTIN — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today surpassed the halfway point of its funding authority after awarding 35 new grants totaling around $79.2 million. Thirty-three of the grants were made through CPRIT’s academic research program and two through its product development research program.

To date, CPRIT has awarded 1,033 grants totaling more than $1.57 billion. The agency was launched in 2009 after Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a 2007 bond issue committing $3 billion to the fight against cancer.

Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Marks Progress at the Halfway Point of its Funding

AUSTIN - Leadership of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today held a press conference at the State Capitol to review progress in its prevention, academic research and product development research programs at the halfway point of the agency’s authorized funding.

CPRIT was launched in 2009 after Texas voters overwhelmingly committed $3 billion in the fight against cancer. To date, CPRIT has awarded 998 grants totaling $1,496,398,115. Tomorrow, the CPRIT Oversight Committee will make decisions expected to push the cumulative award total to more than $1.5 billion.

Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Awards Six New Academic Research Grants

AUSTIN – The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded six grants through its academic research program. The grants, totaling $26,000,000, support the recruitment of six outstanding cancer scientists, including three distinguished senior researchers, to Baylor College of Medicine and three institutions of The University of Texas System – MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Austin and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. James Willson Joins CPRIT Leadership as New Chief Scientific Officer

AUSTIN - Dr. James Willson has been named chief scientific officer of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). He will lead the agency’s academic research program in supporting innovation in cancer research and recruiting world-class cancer researchers to Texas institutions.
